Favorite May 2021 Books

I read quite a few books this month and I found some gems! I try my best to read a variety and I think I succeeded this month.

  1. Eat A Peach: A Memoir - David Chang

David Chang is a massive inspiration to anyone in the food world. He is an award winning chef who has started 16 restaurants. A few hold Michelin stars. They all operate under his restaurant group called Momofuku. Each restaurant brings a unique taste/blend/style of food to hungry diners all around the world. Chang takes you through his upbringing in a deeply Korean American religious family and his struggles with finding his path. This is such a charming and witty book. I read it in about 2 days and wanted more.

2. All The Light We Can Not See - Anthony Doerr

This is a critically acclaimed novel soon to be a movie. It looks at a young girl living in France who becomes blind. Her father is the locksmith at the Museum of Natural History. When WWII breaks out and the Germans begin to bomb France, they both run to the coast to live with the great-uncle. Marie’s father was tasked with carrying the most valuable jewel in the world. The other character you meet in this book is Werner Pfenning and he lives in Germany. He teaches himself to repair radios and other electronic based projects. As time goes on Doerr intertwines these two characters lives as they fight for their lives during World War II.

3. Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It- Ethan Kross

We all have a voice in our head, but sometimes it isn’t very helpful. When we are hoping to boost ourselves up, oftentimes the inner critic comes out instead. Kross talks about the tools we already have to fight our inner critic and improve our lives just by changing how we talk to ourselves. A nice quick read for those of us who need to be nicer to ourselves.

4. The Wolf, The Duck and The Mouse - Mac Barnett (Illustrated by Jon Klassen)

I am researching picture books because I’ve got a gajillion picture book ideas and need to bring them to life. I also love to read picture books once and awhile. Try it once and awhile! This was such a great story and I had no idea where it was going to go. I don’t want to ruin it because this is a short story but, the illustrations, writing, and ending are fabulous. Give it a go.
